After the meeting section of the 2020 AGM, a series of speakers who had an early influence in creating ecological reserves 50 years ago present their stories and interesting perspectives on the early beginnings of the Ecological Reserves System in British Columbia. In the late 1980’s an Ecological Reserve Proposal was submitted for the Sooke Hills. The proposal was never accepted by the government. Dr. Hans Roemer did do a plant survey of the proposed area which is shown below.
Hans Roemer wrote this report after a trip with Chris Kissinger, Ken Millard and Keith Erickson to the wetland portion of the reserve:
Hans Roemer compiled this list of Composite Plants and another partial checklist of species in the proposal stages of the Ecological reserve. McQueen ER composite plant list map and photos Three B&W maps and several photos of the reserve are included.

Hans Roemer wrote this letter in 1991 concerning the proposed expansion of this ER to include Old growth alluvial forests. he concluded that other intact watersheds should be examined before carrying out this expansion. To protect an exceptionally well-preserved natural grassland ecosystems representative for the lower elevations bunchgrass prairie of the Chilcotin.
