2023 Ecological Reserve #7 Warden’s Annual Report

Report Date: November 15, 2023.

 

Again in 2023, Warden Mark Gardiner was unable to access the reserve because of mobility issues.

 

April 15, 2023.

9:45-10:49. 6℃. Sky overcast, wind calm.

Birds outside ER: Pine Siskin, American Robin

Birds inside ER: Pine siskin, American Robin, Northern Flicker, Cassin’s Finch, Mountain Chickadee, Pygmy Nuthatch.

Plants in bloom: Ranunculus glaberrimus, Lomatium geyeri,

Plants in bud: Balsamorhiza sagitatta, Antennaria dimorpha,

Foliage: Lewisia rediviva, Fritillaria pudica, Lithospermum ruderale.

 

May 25, 2023

10:45-12:45.  16℃. Sky 50% cloud cover, NW breeze.

Birds outside ER: American Robin, Steller’s Jay, Pygmy Nuthatch, California Quail, Cassin’s Finch, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Red Crossbill, Clark’s Nutcracker.

Birds inside ER: American Robin, Chipping Sparrow, Cassin’s Finch, Vesper Sparrow, Red Crossbill, Mourning Dove, Hairy Woodpecker, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Western Wood-Peewee,

Pine Siskin, Hammond’s Flycatcher, Northern Flicker.

Plants in bloom: Lewisia rediviva, Oxytropis spp., Vicia spp., Antennaria dimorpha, Lithospermum ruderale, Tragopogon dubius, Crepis spp., Anticlea zigadenus, Balsamorhiza sagitatta, Linaria spp.

 

June 30, 2023

7:35 – 9:20. 21℃. Sky clear, wind calm.

Birds outside ER: Western Bluebird, Western Wood-Peewee, Northern Flicker, Pygmy Nuthatch, Black-billed Magpie, Common Raven, Violet-green Swallow, House Wren, American Robin, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Chipping Sparrow.

Birds inside ER: Northern Flicker, Vesper Sparrow, Pygmy Nuthatch, Western Wood-Peewee, American Robin, Red Crossbill, Calliope Hummingbird, Tree Swallow.

Plants in bloom: Vicia americana (seven plants), Achillea millefolia, Tragopogon dubius, Crepis spp., Linaria spp., Calachortus macrocarpus, Phacelia linearis, Erigeron spp.

Insects: Blue butterfly, sweat bee, grasshoppers, dark butterfly.

 

July 31, 2023

7:05 – 9:05. 15℃. Sky clear, light south breeze.

Walked to NW corner of South fence, down along East fence to corner above creek. Noted that the fence had been bent along the golf course for about 50m. No garbage in corner.  Continued along the top of the ravine to experiment location, then NW and N up the slope to the large drainage, E and NE back to the brown gate.

Birds outside ER: Pygmy Nuthatch, Western Wood-Peewee, Cassin’s Finch, American Robin, Mountain Chickadee, Common Raven, Mourning Dove.

Birds inside ER: Western Wood-Peewee, Grouse species, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Yellow-rumped Warbler, White-breasted Nuthatch, Pygmy Nuthatch.

Insects: Grasshoppers,

Mammals: Red Squirrel,

Plants in bloom: Artemisia dracunculus, Centaurea diffusa, Erigeron spp., Where irrigation kept area wet and weedy: Tragopogon dubius, Lactuca serriola.

 

August 31, 2023

7:10-8:45. 16C.  Sky cloudy.  Wind calm.

Walked W along the foot of the bluffs to the deepest drainage, SE along the drainage, E to the fence corner, E and NE to the gate.

Birds outside the ER: Pygmy Nuthatch, Black-billed Magpie, Hairy Woodpecker.

Birds inside the ER: Pygmy Nuthatch, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Mountain Chickadee, Mourning Dove, Sparrow spp.

Plants in bloom: Ericameria nauseosa.

Insects: One tiny moth.

 

October 30, 2023.

14:25 – 15:15. 4℃. Sky clear, wind calm.

From the brown gate, I walked NW to the second large drainage, S along the drainage, NE to NW corner of S fence and followed the fence back to the gate. That section of fence was in good condition.

Birds outside ER: Common Raven

Birds inside ER: None heard or seen.

Plants in bloom: None.

Insects: None

Mammals: None.
