Biodiversity Monitoring
Monitoring Activities
Except for one visit made in collaboration with BC Parks personnel (described below as site visit May 31, 2006), biodiversity monitoring activities at the Baeria Rocks Ecological Reserve have been limited to boat visits where bird and mammal surveys were done from the vessel. Counts were made on birds and mammals inside the 20m contour line and noted where outside but adjacent.
Counts results are as follows:

The following account of the Baeria Rocks Ecological Reserve site visit was taken from the June edition of the Bamfield newspaper “The Beacon”.
Volunteers Help Marine Protected Areas
Baeria Rocks Ecological Reserve is a little known marine protected area (MPA) right here in Barkley Sound. Although the Reserve was initially set up as a jurisdictional challenge by the province, the primary role of the reserve is to protect nesting seabirds and to preserve rich inter-tidal and sub-tidal communities.
Anne Stewart is the new “volunteer ecological reserve warden” for Baeria Rocks and is trying to help raise awareness about the reserve and promote sustainable and sensitively appropriate research.
Since very little research has been done in the reserve to date, a logical starting place was to do some basic inventory work, and at the end of May, an excursion of volunteers from the Bamfield Marine Science Centre met BC Parks personnel from Tofino at the Reserve and began work after a hiatus of nearly thirty years.
Tom Bird and his team of divers did biodiversity surveys below water and an inter-tidal team did preliminary biodiversity inventory work on shore. The BC Parks people erected signs and surveyed Black-Oyster Catcher nests. A big thank you to all of the BMSC volunteers, it would not have been possible without you.
Please note that the Friends of Ecological Reserves has some limited scholarship funding for graduate student research in Ecological Reserves and to date there has been little done in Marine Ecological Reserves.
The following description was taken from field notes by both the divers and by Anne Stewart on shore with top-side photographs taken by Siobhan Gray.
Francis Bruhwiler and Carl Wilson of BC Parks installed signage on the south islet. Erica McClaren conducted a Black Oystercatcher nest inventory on the south islet separated by a surge channel from the high part where the light is and signage was being installed. Anne and Siobhan got off on the islet with Erica and did an inventory of the intertidal and birds.

5 unidentified ducks were seen between the north and south islets.
On the south islet, abundant gooseneck barnacle plates and Pisaster ossicles in evidence of bird predation. Several bird bones also found (eagle predation?).
Note one prawn fisherman seen tending traps just outside reserve.
Two biodiversity inventory dives were made by the volunteer divers. The first was done starting at the west point of the north islet and swimming northeast. Divers went into the water at approximately 10 meters at Latitude 48o 57.288’North; Longitude 125 o 09.299’West. Maximum depth was 20 meters although much of the dives were spent considerably shallower looking at abalone abundance. There were two objectives to the dives;
1) to specifically look at the abundance of abalone Haliotis kamstchatkana, a federally listed Threatened Species and 2) to do a precursory general inventory of sub-tidal biodiversity within the Ecological Reserve.
The second dive was done just off the south islet on the lee (northeast) side. The volunteer divers included Tom Bird, Sharon Jeffries, Jenn Provencher, Scott Toews, Stephanie Avery, Theresa Douthright, Don Levitan and Kylie Pawluk. Most of the divers did two swims and recorded species diversity and abundance as they went. The species list and abundance indicators (zero, 1, 10s, 100s, 1000s) are listed below by diver.
